VLAN Limitation on 3120 Switchports

Jump to solution

I have run into another issue that has to do with 802.1q on the 3120.  While using one of the switch ports as the WAN interface for a customer router I have found that the 3120 only supports vlan numbers from 1 to 512.  This is another problem as I have different area starting with different vlan numbers and some start at 1000.  I know that standard vlans range from 1 to 4096.  Can you please find out why they limited the 3120 to only support up to 512?

Thanks,

Charley

Re: Does the WAN port of a 3120 support vlans?

Charley,

This appears to be a bug in the web interface of the 3120. Please open a ticket with Technical Support so we can have this issue addressed. You can create a ticket in several ways:

- Over the phone by calling 888-423-8726

- Emailing support@adtran.com

- Opening a webticket on the Adtran website

Until then, as a workaround, you can configure the higher-range Vlans in the CLI. Once created in the CLI, they can be assigned and referenced in the web interface as normal. I've specified how to create a Vlan in the CLI below:

(config)# vlan <VLAN ID>

Let us know if you have any further questions.

Thanks,

Noor

Charley,

I branched the your question into a new discussion.

Could you provide more details as to where you are running into this limitation (i.e. error message, configuration)? You are correct that the vlan IDs can range from 1 to 4094. I have not run into any issues in configuring a Vlan or a Vlan interface with an ID higher than 512.

If you are providing details of your configuration, please be sure to remove any information that may be sensitive to your network.

Thanks,

Noor

When configuring a 3120 with the latest firmware and you go to the vlan setup.  Create a new vlan and you will see out to the side in the description that it only supports 1-510.  I found that when trying to enter a vlan id of 1005 it errored out with the message that it must be between 1 and 510.

I did not even consider trying from the command-line since even the notes beside the vlan tag option stated 1-510 as the only valid tags.  I guess I should have tried it.  I will open a ticket to get this resolved.
