Adtran Atlas 550 Craft cable, XMODEM method to save and load cfg is failing.

Jump to solution
Adtran Atlas 550. Sorry, I can't seem to nail down successful cfg save or load using a craft cable and XMODEM protocol.  (I'm not dead in the water - on a different windows machine I used the TFTP method and an ethernet connection to get the unit working. I have other units to deploy, though, and the craft method would be logistically a lot better.) The windows 8.1 machine that I am using with the craft cable is connected to the Adtran unit craft port. The windows machine does not have TFTP. The windows machine has an "Adtran" file share set to allow Everyone Read and Write. The Adtran unit is not connected to the network. Nothing is plugged into any of the Adtran cards.  I am using Putty and  serial connection. I'm selecting XMODEM as the transfer method. I am getting "XMODEM: FAILED....  I don't see anything in the event log related to cfg, just the cold start and link down on two of the ports.FAILED...". Any help would be appreciated.

Patrick – I’m running Windows 8.1, using the Craft cable, Tera Term and XMODEM. I can do a cfg load, but not a save. So the behavior (barring pilot error) is the same as Windows 10. I should be all set for now. I can load with the Craft cable and save with TFTP. Thanks for your help. I have a better understanding. Bill

While PuTTY does support a serial connection, it doesn't have an XMODEM file transfer option.

In the ATLAS, once you make the selection for it to either "Load and Use Config" or "Save Config Remotely," you must then have your VT100 program either transmit the file or receive the file using XMODEM. PuTTY doesn't have a "file transfer" option, so you'll have to use a different program (such as HyperTerminal, or Tera Term, or any number of other terminal programs).

Hope this helps,

Patrick

Patrick, Thanks for the quick reply. I installed Tera Term and am connecting to the Adtran unit as Serial, COM1, going to config transfer and selecting save config. I am then selecting on the Tera Term file menu Transfer->Receive and entering the path and Atlas550.cfg as a name. When I select OK a 0 byte Atlas550.cfg shows up immediately. The Atlas utility save goes to FAILED after 20 seconds or so. So it appears that the connectivity is there and the Adtran utility is attempting to download the file. I have experimented some with the Tera Term Serial port settings, but without any luck in getting a file to show up. Thanks, Bill

Bill,

It's been a long time since I saved a configuration file using XMODEM, but some of my colleagues and I tested things out, and we believe that Windows 10 is not able to receive a file via XMODEM. We tried this from different PCs as well as different ATLAS 550s. We even tested with a TA 624 to verify.

It can send a file using XMODEM with no problem, but receiving one fails every time.

We also tested with a Windows XP machine and it was able to receive the configuration file (using HyperTerminal) with no problems.

So if you are using Windows 10, then you can download the configuration using TFTP and then upload it using XMODEM, or you'll have to use a computer running a different Windows version.
