Re: SNMP

:

Thank you for asking this question in the Support Community.  Here is the Configuring SNMP in AOS document that will guide you through the details of the technology, as well as the different aspects of how to configure SNMP in an ADTRAN unit.

I hope that makes sense, but please do not hesitate to reply to this post with any additional questions or information.  I will be happy to help in any way I can.

Re: SNMP

Thank You for the post of the instructions. I am still having an issue understanding it though. I have the snmp agent enabled on the adtran but the snmp manager I am using is not seeing the NetVanta 3450.

Re: SNMP

When you said "the SNMP manager is not seeing the NetVanta 3450," what do you mean?  Do you mean it isn't able to poll or walk the OIDs on the ADTRAN unit?  Or is it not receiving SNMP trap notifications?

Also, you mentioned that you have the command snmp agent enabled on the ADTRAN.  Do you have the other required SNMP commands in the configuration as well?  Does your SNMP manager have the SNMP AOS MIBs loaded?

From the document I linked previously, here are the required steps:

Step 1: Compile the AOS Product-Specific MIBs

Download the MIBs you wish to install on your NMS. Visit ADTRAN’s website at www.adtran.com to retrieve AOS MIBs.

Step 2: Enable SNMP

Enter the following command from the Global Configuration mode to configure SNMP. By default, the SNMP agent is disabled. To enable the SNMP agent, use the ip snmp agent command.

(config)# ip snmp agent

Executing this command enables the SNMP agent within the product. This also allows the product to send traps to a trap management station if configured appropriately.

Step 4: Enable Read-Only and Read-Write SNMP Access

An SNMP community string is similar to an authentication password between the NMS and SNMP agent device. The community strings can be used to restrict users access to the SNMP MIB information. Specify a community string or password to control access to the SNMP information. By default, there are no SNMP communities configured. Use one or more of the following variations of the snmp-server community command to configure SNMP communities:

(config)# snmp-server community <community>

(config)# snmp-server community <community> ro

(config)# snmp-server community <community> rw

Here is a basic, sample configuration for SNMP on an AOS unit (the AOS MIBs must be installed on the SNMP Network Management System, and they must use the same community name):

ip snmp agent

!

snmp-server community NAME RW

Please, reply with any additional questions you have related to this topic.

Re: SNMP

Also there are 56 mibs I don't know which ones to load. I am not running version 3. as for the manager not seeing it. it will ping it but when I have it look for an agent it says the device does not have an agent

Re: SNMP

If you do a debug snmp packets and you do not get any output, then most likely the SNMP traffic is not getting to the ADTRAN.  It may be blocked by a firewall.  If you would like to reply to this post and attach a copy of your configuration, I will be happy to review it for you.  (Please, make sure you remove any information that may be sensitive to the organization.)  Also, include the output from the show snmp command as well as what subnet the NMS resides on and which IP address or interface the NMS is attempting to contact on the ADTRAN.

Re: SNMP

For all but rare circumstances, you will load all of the AOS MIBs into the NMS.

Re: SNMP

It appears that you are receiving SNMP traffic.  Will you reply with the output from the debug snmp packet command?

In the above output from the show snmp command, it shows "10 Bad community names."  Will you confirm that the NMS is also using the community name "public?"  It is case sensitive.

Also, what IP address is the NMS polling on the AOS device, and which interface does the traffic from the NMS arrive on?

Re: SNMP

May be the NMS I am using. I am installing spiceworks. the 10 bad community names, don't change. they have been there since friday, so I must of had something configured where it was at least talking. did you see anything wrong with the snmp configuration?

Did you get a chance to try using the other NMS?  Also, what IP address is the NMS polling on the AOS device, and which interface does the traffic from the NMS arrive on?
