Netvanta 7100 remote phone message button does not work

Jump to solution

Hi,  I have a Netvanta 7100 with a remote phone.  Press *98 will work.  But when I press the blinking Message button, it does not work or at least no audio.  Any ideas?

Remote phone is not on VPN.  I'm using R10.6.0.E with Adtran 712 phone.

Thanks everyone for helping me out.  I end up deleting the files for the phone and let the system recreate it.  Reboot the phone, it works now.

touristsis,

Is this related to the other post you made here?

If so, you need to make sure the sip alg is off on the 3120 with the following command from global config mode: no ip firewall alg sip.  If that does not work we will likely need to see the configurations from each unit and debugs from the 7100.

Thanks,

Matt

It is the same.  After I did the no ip firewall alg sip command it works when press *98.  But if I press the messages light, it does not work.  Any ideas?

The messages key should also be dialing *98.  When you press the messages key do you see something different being dialing?  If factory defaulting the phone does not help we will need to see the configurations from both units as well as the output from a debug voice verbose and debug sip stack messages (both enabled at the same time in one text file) from the 7100 when the issue is recreated.  Please make a .zip with all of these and upload it to the FTP server with the instructions below.

Open Internet Explorer web browser on their PC
Type the following URL:  ftp://ftp.adtran.com

Press the Alt key, click View, and then click Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer

Double-click the "Incoming" folder
Drag and drop files from PC into the Internet Explorer window

Reply to this post with the exact filenames used so we can retrieve the files

Thanks,

Matt

touristsis,

Any update on this issue?  If you were able to resolve it please come back to this and post an update so other members can benefit from it.  If you are still having trouble and can supply the debugs requested above to the FTP server, I would be more than happy to review them.

Thanks,

Matt

Hi Matt, I've posted the log on the ftp.  It is adtran114putty.txt.  I ran the debug voice verbose and debug sip stack message on the Adtran Netvanta 3120 which is the remote site where the phone extension 114 resides, press the message button, but got no output.

So that log file is from the Netvanta 7100 only.

Thanks for your help!

Thank you for the debug.  My first suggestion is to check and make sure that you have this configured properly for a Simple Remote Phone setup.  We just updated our guide recently and I would definitely recommend you check over everything to make sure it follows the guide: Configuring Simple Remote Phones for the NetVanta 7000 Series. I would also recommend that media anchoring be turned off globally on the 7100.  It should be set to no ip rtp media-anchoring in the configuration.   If you still have problems after these suggestions, I am going to need to see the configuration of both the 7100 and the 3120 if you can upload them to the FTP server.

Thanks,

Matt

Matt,

I've configure the command no ip rtp media-anchoring and tested, yet no change.  I can press the line appearance and dial *98 and it works fine.  Just does not work when pressing the message button.

I went through the configuring simple remote phones and cannot find this checkmark below.  I'm running version R10.6.0.E.

UDP for the new Protocol/Port, and enter a non-standard port, such as 25069. Select the check box under Secure Remote-User to enable security for this port. The Secure Remote-User functionality is not available on TCP ports.

any ideas.  I've also uploaded by configure files to you already.

files names are
config-khanghome-04-15-2013.cfg
config-bcs_adtran_7100_demo-04-15-2013.cfg

After looking over your configurations it appears there is a VPN between these sites, which makes Simple Remote Phones not a good fit for this application.  Unfortunately, when there is a SIP trunk configured on the 7100 and a VPN to a remote site where a phone is, things get a bit complicated and require a GRE over IPSEC setup to prevent audio issues.  The GRE over IPSEC tunnel is necessary so that site-to-site voice traffic has a separate media gateway IP address from SIP traffic that will not traverse a tunnel.    Our SIP Trunking Guide expands on this more on page 75, and then refers to the configuration steps on pages 31 for the GUI and 59 for the CLI.  Another caveat is horsepower of the NetVanta 3120.  If you have more than one phone at that site another remote router may be required.  This is also discussed in the SIP Trunking Guide.

Thanks,

Matt

Thanks Matt.  I really appreciate it.  I'm however, still confused though.  Maybe you can shed some light on this for me.  Although there is VPN between the two sites, I'm using port forwarding to connect the phone to the 7100, not the VPN.  I'm basically simulating a remote site.  Does that make sense?

So if this was the case, are you telling me that I can get rid of the Adtran 3120 put in a cheap router with port forwarding and will will work much better or much easier to setup?

Thank you for the clarification.  I think I am on track with you now.  I didn't see any port forwards configured for a phone on the 3120, but you are correct that in a simple remote phone setup the phone will register to the public IP of the 7100 and bypass the VPN since it is not destined for a private IP.  When the phone re-registers (via the HMR rules on the 7100) that should keep a hole open in the 3120 firewall for incoming calls.

Since there is a VPN between the sites is there a reason why you are attempting to set this up as a simple remote phone instead of the recommend method of sending the phone traffic through the VPN tunnel?

It is perplexing that you can make this work by manually dialing *98, since hitting the message key on the phone does the same thing (sends an INVITE to *98).  It may be worth factory defaulting the phone just to see if that makes a difference.  Another thing to try is to disable VQM on the 3120 to see if that helps.  If not and you continue with this setup I will need to see a new debug on the 7100.  I'm sorry I didn't request this in my last post, but the debug changes significantly when media anchoring is disabled globally, and I think the one I have on file was from when it was enabled.  If it is possible to get a WAN side packet capture from the 7100, that would be helpful too to go along with debugs in the working and non-working state for comparison.  If the configurations changed at all from the last ones you supplied I will need those too.

Thanks,

Matt

Re: Netvanta 7100 remote phone message button does not work

Just out of curiosity have you downloaded the phones config file from the FTP server and verified it contains all the correct fields and information?  When I upgraded to the newer code the system defaulted the config for the remote phones and I had to redo the configuration.  When the remote user presses the Message button does it actually show *98 as the dialed number?  Maybe the config for the button got corrupted somewhere and it is actually dialing the wrong SPRE code.

Thanks,

John

The phone should display *98 as the dialed number for just a split second. After that, it should switch to the actual voicemail extension. Would you be able to take a packet capture in front of the phone to be sure?

touristsis,

Were you ever able to resolve this?  If so, can you update this post with the result so others can benefit from the solution?  If you are still having trouble with this, I would be more than happy to continue troubleshooting with you, but will need the results from all of the different suggestions in my previous post.

Thanks,

Matt
