point to point T1 with 2 vlans

Jump to solution

I have two Netvanta 3305 units.  I think they are 2nd generation (P/N:1202880L1).  I am trying to bridge 2 vlans/(bridge-groups?) through eth 0/1.  The T1 is on slot 1/1 WAN-T1.  Is this possible without using routing?  I can't make eth 0/1 a trunk port and then use bvi.  I need one vlan for management and one for data.

THanks for any help

Thank you for asking this question in the support community.  If I understand the question properly, by default, downstream devices should be able to be managed in an integrated routing and bridging (IRB) configuration, because the ADTRAN is going to pass this traffic through.  The following post has an example of an IRB configuration in this application:  https://supportforums.adtran.com/message/8106#8106

Please, feel free to expand on this question, with additional information, and I will be happy to help in any way I can.  Also, for further reference and advanced bridging configuration examples you can view the "Configuring Bridging in AOS" document.

Levi,

We are using firmware R10.7.0 in our 2 Netvanvta 3305 routers.  I was looking at fig.5 in the "Configuring Bridging" document that you linked.  It shows eth0/1 set up as 802.1q trunking on both routers.  If we do that, we can't set up the bridge.  If we set the the port to lets say, bridge-group 10 (management vlan) we don't get anything through the port unless we set our upstream cisco switch to native vlan10.  We are not allowed to use vlan 1 at all.  It seems you have to use vlan 1/ Bridge-group 1 to make this work.  What am I doing wrong here?  Maybe it just isn't compatible with our Cisco switches.  Would like to use let's say vlan 10 for management and vlan 20 for data and never use vlan 1 at all. Is it possible?  The diagram 5 setup doesn't seem to work.  Maybe the setup needs to be modified since we are not using vlan 1 on our Cisco switches.

Thanks,

Paul

I think the example starting on page 28 (figure 5) is how you should configure the ADTRAN units.  The Cisco switchport connected to the ADTRAN unit will need to be a trunk port, but the ADTRAN Ethernet port will not be configured as 802.1q trunking, because it is just acting as a "bridge" in this design.  The diagram indicates the link to the switch needs to be a trunk, but the configuration example shows how the ADTRAN should be configured.  The only caveat is that in order to manage the ADTRAN unit, the IP address assigned to the ADTRAN will have to be in the native VLAN (I believe VLAN 10 in your example).

If you would like to reply with a copy of your configuration, I will be happy to review it for you.

Levi,

I was able to ping the remote switch, see mac addresses from both vlans at the trunk interface of the remote switch, and manage remote switch with the sample config attached here.  I am still not able to manage the two routers.  They seem to be totally transparent.  Does something need to be added to the bvi port to make these managable?

- I had a couple of further questions:

- You have split your T1 into 2 TDM groups. Currently you are only using half of your T1. Is this what you intended?

- Which IP address are you attempting to log into the router from?

- Are you attempting to log into the GUI, SSH, or telnet?

Would you be able to post the complete configuration to see which services are enabled and which are not? Please remember to remove any information that may be sensitive to your network.

Thanks,

Noor

I'm trying to log in to the routers with the ip that I have in the bvi 10 interface of each router.  I'm attempting with SSH through Putty.  I can't ping the two routers with the ip address in bvi 10.  I have a feeling I'm missing something very simple here.  Do I need another cross-connect somewhere?

- Which IP address are you attempting to ping the BVI interface from? Also, please post your complete configuration (with sensitive information removed) for us to review. Also, it may be helpful to take a look at the output to "show interface" as well.

You are not missing any cross-connects, but there is a possibility that the issue is unrelated to the bridging config but is related to another portion of the config.

Please do not hesitate to let us know if you have any questions.
