Wireless Reconfiguration Assistance

Jump to solution

Hi!  I'm a proud owner of a NetVanta 3120 with 3 APs attached.  Everything is working beautifully at the moment with the WAN port connected to our secondary Internet connection external to our firewall, but no LAN access.  However, I have been tasked by management with providing wireless access to our LAN in the near future, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to do so.  What I would like is to end up with is two separate wireless networks: one "guest" network with Internet access only, and one "employee" network with full access to the LAN and Internet.  I see that I can establish VLANs on the private side to segregate traffic, but I'm not really seeing how to maintain multiple separate wireless connections.  Is that even possible with this device?  If not, are there recommendations on how to proceed with granting LAN access securely to staff?

Thanks,

Ryan

- Thanks for posting your question on the forum!

You are certainly on the right track on how to configure this. Each VLAN can be made to associate itself to a different SSID. So, essentially, you would have 2 wireless networks available for users to connect to. Each wireless network will be associated with the VLAN which will have firewall rules in place to permit or deny traffic as you see fit. You will also want to keep in mind that the port that is connecting to your AP will need to be setup as a trunk to allow both VLANs to traverse.

I am not sure whether you are using NetVanta 150s or NetVanta 160s so I will provide links to documentation for both.

Please do not hesitate to let us know if you have any further questions.
