speed duplex mis-match netvanta 150 connected to netvanta 7100

    larryp New Member

I have found that when I use a Netvanta 150 I sometimes get the following message:

      2012.04.07 17:08:46 LLDP LLDP:  Speed Duplex mis-match on eth 0/21. Speed/Duplex: "100M/full-duplex"   Neighbor Speed/Duplex: "? duplex"

the message occurs every 5 seconds or so.

the equipment has been in service for a long time.

to solve the problem immediately I went into hte configuration of port 21 and entered in no LLDP send-and-receive

can you help explain why this is occuring?

      thanks

@larryp - Thank you for your question. Based on the output you provided, it looks like the NetVanta 150 is not sending its speed and duplex information via LLDP to the NetVanta 7100. The cause of this needs further investigation.

I was hoping you could provide me with some additional information. Could you post the output to "show interface ethernet 0/21" and "show interface dot11ap <AP Interface Number>"? If you are not familiar with the CLI, this information can be pulled from the web interface. The information regarding port 21 can be viewed by navigating to Data -> Switch -> Ports from the panel on the left. Click on 'eth 0/21' and take note of what the 'speed/duplex' is set to. The information regarding the access point can be viewed by navigating to  Data -> Wireless -> APs/Radios/VAP from the panel on the left. Under "Access Point ID", click on the AP in question. Take note of what the 'speed/duplex' is set to.

Also, which firmware is the NetVanta 7100 currently running?

Please reply to this post with the information requested and we will be more than happy to help you. Please do not hesitate to let us know if you have any questions.

          Thanks,

          Noor

as a side note, I have about a dozen 150s installed at various locations (this location has two).  out of the 12, there are 3 that have this behavor.

                    Larry,

From the information you provided, it appears that there is no speed or duplex mismatch. Could you re-enable LLDP on port 21 and turn on LLDP debug? The command to start the debug is "debug lldp". Please provide the output to this debug on this thread.

                    Thanks,

                    Noor

                        Noor,

Per your request, here is the debug… I took a few cycles, I also turned on verbose – looking at the data, it appears that the root cause of the message is a laptop that is connected to the Netvanta 150.

                        Here is my analysis.

                        1.     Interface port 21 is connected to an access point (see show dot11 acc, show mac add int eth 0/21)

                        2.     Show mac address shows that there is the wifi hotspot connected (00:A0:C8:65:82:73) as well as two other devices

                        3.     LLDP says that the MAC address of the device responding on 0/21 is not the Adtran wireless router (see LLDP debug).  It appears to be one of the other devices (00:1E:4C:4F:E0:3C)

                        4.     Did a verbose debug – looks like it is a remote PC connected to the wireless access port

Based upon the information that I gathered, it looks like the Netvanta 150 is not having a mismatch of speed but rather the PC that is connected over the wireless network side to the Netvanta.  That also explains my earlier statements about seeing this on more than one Netvanta 150.  I believe that my observations were correct, but there was a misunderstanding of the meaning of the Netvanta 7100 error message.  The problem was not with the device connected to port 21 but rather one of the wireless devices connected to the Netvanta 150.

So now here is the question, why is the Netvanta 7100 reacting to a speed mismatch when in fact there is none  (IE there is no speed mismatch with the Netvanta 150 and the device that is responding to the LLDP message is a PC that is transmitting it over the wireless connection). The response to the LLDP from the PC seems to make sense (LLDP:  Speed/Duplex: "? duplex" – see debug messages below).

                        Regards

                              Larry,

I have to agree with your assessment that it appears that there is a PC with a wireless NIC that is transmitting LLDP messages to the NetVanta 150 wirelessly.Since the connection is over wireless, it does not have a speed/duplex to report. The 7100 is receiving these messages and seeing that the PC is not reporting a speed and duplex, thus construing it as a duplex mismatch. I, personally, have not seen a PC transmit LLDP messages, especially over wireless. After discussing with Adtran Design Engineers, they would like the opportunity to look at this a bit deeper to determine if we are treating these LLDP messages as they should be treated. Please open a ticket with Adtran Technical Support so that we can open a case with our Design Engineering group to take a look at what you are experiencing.

You can open a ticket in several ways:

Please be sure you reference this thread when opening the ticket so that the Tech Support Engineer knows where information can be referenced.

In the mean time, there are a couple of workarounds you can implement to stop the messages from coming up. First, as you mentioned, you can disable LLDP on the 7100. The other option is to disable LLDP on the wireless adapter on the PC.

Please do not hesitate to let us know if you have any further questions.

                              Thanks,

                              Noor

Thanks for the note… I will open a ticket.

Regarding disabling the reporting on the PC, I can’t find a way to disable the LLDP feature in the PC – already took a look…

It might be useful to publish that this happens….  It was driving me crazy for some time.  Because it was related to the laptop and it is reported via the 150, the problem appeared to move to different 150’s when in fact, it was actually related to my PC connecting through a specific 150.  Thus the comment about the problem with a one or two 150’s out of a dozen or so that I have installed.
