Configuring a 550 to allow two PBX's to use one PRI

    stu New Member

      Hi,

I have a single PRI that I would like two devices to be able to share (a Panasonic PBX and a NEC PBX) and if possible be able to have them use different lines so both could be used at the same time.  I have an Adtran ATLAS 550, powered on and accessible via telnet connection.  What I am not sure about is how to configure the unit to make this happen and whether I even have the correct modules in the unit.  I've attached a screenshot of the Modules section and from what I can tell I should be putting the feed from the carrier into the Ntw1 slot then the 2 PBX devices should be connected to the board in the Option slot 3 (Slt3).  However I am unsure if that module is what we need, when I look at the Part Number it reads 1200311L1.  The manual says that is a Dual Nx 56/64 which I do not believe will work with a PBX PRI card.  Can someone confirm I need to get another option module (I was thinking we need the 1200314L1 Dual/Quad T1/PRI option module).

My apologies for the dumb questions (I've never dealt with an Adtran unit before or anything like it),

      Stewart

Ok, I believe I just need configuration help/advice now as I double checked the system and it appears we do have a 1200314L1 optional module installed, it just wasn't being recognized.  It is now being recognized after I reseated the board and powered the system back on.  I guess the question now is should I be using Dial Plans to get the configuration how we want it or be using Dedicated Maps?  (or something else entirely?)

Thank you for that Patrick, I've gone through and setup the dial plans.  My next issue is the two PBX's plugged into the Dual PRI/TI module are showing LOS and RED alarms in the Atlas setup.  I am using regular network patch cords to connect them to the Atlas but I know they are ok because they work normally if I plug directly into the carrier.  Could it be a firmware issue or do I need to make a special patch cord for the connection to the Atlas?  I've attached two screenshots that show info and the alarms.

The Firmware should be upgraded when you get a chance, but the LOS is a physical layer issue. From the ATLAS to your PBX's you should use a T1 cross-over cable, rather than a straight-through cable. T1 cross-over crosses pin 1 to 4 and 2 to 5.

Thanks again Patrick and sorry about wasting your time, it was indeed a wiring issue.  I found the required layout in

"ATLAS_550_Dual_T1_PRI_Network_Interface_Module_Quick_Start_Guide__Rev_A_.pdf" and the alarms went away when I made those cables.  All I have to do is fix my In#Accept entries in my Dial Plans and I should be all finished.

Note:  I've confirmed both PBX's can dial out while connected to the Adtran.

Very much appreciate your help Patrick!

Actually, spoke a little too soon, I'm having trouble trying to get my inbound calling to work as before.  For example I have a DID/DDI that normally goes to an auto attendant using channels 1 -> down while outgoing calls use <- 23.  Now my calls come in on 23 and the auto attendant is not receiving any calls.  It appears the In#Access number must be 7 digit but not sure what else to do.

Ok, did a Substitution Template to turn the 7 digit back into 10 digit and the Panasonic PBX was happy.  So my two problems are:

                    1. I can't get the NEC to answer the incoming calls, when I try it gives me "Error".  I do not get the error if I plug the PRI into the carrier using a normal network lead.  This leads me to believe the NEC PBX does not like the special wiring to connect to the Atlas but I'm not sure what to do, will investigate further.

                    2. Incoming calls should be coming in on channel/line 1 but instead are coming in on 23.  Not sure how to change this in the Atlas.

For #2, the ATLAS only sends calls in a descending order. This cannot be changed in the ATLAS.

The wiring is physical layer and would only effect physical layer errors. If there are no physical layer errors, then the wiring is fine.

For the "Error," you can try capturing the D-channel messages and compare the original setup message from the Telco to the setup message sent from the ATLAS to the NEC, or to see if the ERROR message gives any information as to why there is an error.

To view these messages you need to go under SYSTEM CONFIG and then into EVENT LOGGING, and set the ISDN L2 FORMATTED messages to INFO. Then to view the events to go SYSTEM STATUS under the EVENT LOG.
