UC Server Migration to Newer Hardware

    workforceinsight New Member

      Hi!

We're running our UC Server on some functional, albeit legacy hardware. We have the replacement server available and we've installed the exact same flavor of OS (Server 2008 R2 SP1 x64).

We're currently running 5.1.0.7931 on the old system -- what's the best way to move the entire configuration to the new server from square 1?

      Thanks!BC

If you are moving from one physical server to another the instructions for this procedure for both Windows Server 2003 and 2008 are outlined in TN066 - NetVanta UC Server 4.5 - Backup and Restore Procedures.

If the server is being relocated to VMware the process is different.  To recreate a virtual image of the existing server, VMware's free tool should be used.  This tool essentially automates the whole procedure which can be run in concert with the live server until you want to enable it.

          Thanks,

              Thanks, Matt

It seems that the critical backup data is stored in

              C:\Program Files (x86)\ADTRAN\NetVanta UC Server\Data

Now how do I install UC Server on the new hardware -- just normally or is there anything special that needs to be done?  Once installation is complete, would I just replace the info in

              C:\Program Files (x86)\ADTRAN\NetVanta UC Server\Data

              Thanks!

As outlined in the guide for Windows 2003 (I assume that is what you are using), you need to backup C:\Inetpub\ftproot in addition to the C:\Program Files (x86)\ADTRAN\NetVanta UC Server\Data folder.  Separate to these folders you need to perform the database backup too.  That process is outlined on page 6 and uses the .zip file located here (depending on your version of UC):

TN066 - NetVanta UC Server 4.5 Backup and Restore Files

TN066 - NetVanta UC Server 5.x Backup and Restore Files

Since the new server will be on different hardware it will have a different machine ID.  For that reason you cannot use the license key from the old server.  You will need to submit a license key request by going to http://www.adtran.com/uctools and clicking the link for License Key Request.

Install the same version of Windows and the same version and build of UC Server that was previously installed, including the presence components if they were installed previously. You will need to input your new license key as a part of this process.  After installing UC server, follow the Configuration wizard. Add just one user, and finish the wizard.  Then you will need to use the .zip file and instructions outlined in the guide to finish the restore process.

Just in case you run into any issues, you should keep the old server offline in its current state until you are completely up and running on the new server, and have done extensive testing and checking to make sure everything is operating correctly.

                  Thanks,

                  Matt
